The rivalry between Sena Kobayakawa of the Deimon Devil Bats and Seijuurou Shin of the Oujou White Knights is one of the driving forces behind the emotional pathos of Eyeshield 21.

While Shin is Sena's first rival, Sena is Shin's first encounter with a fellow athlete that poses a genuine challenge to his once unmatched speed. Nobody before Sena has ever been able to get past Shin's Spear Tackle, which gives Shin a large boost in motivation to grow not only stronger, but faster in order to overtake him.
